Niho Taniwha - How is it being actioned in your class or kura?

Belinda Mackean - September 20, 2023

After participating in Kāhui Conference and listening to Melanie Riwai-Couch, what are we now going to put in place for our learners?

We have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the Conference day on Friday 1 September.  Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful comments you sent in.  Melanie's message and the ideas from her book, Niho Taniwha have definitely sparked some thoughts, whakaaro and insights for many of you.

Some of the common themes from your feedback are

-  the commitment to improve your own cultural competency

-  a desire to learn more, read more, gain a greater understanding

- a sense of responsibility to support ākonga and their whānau

Many of you have actions that you will now take to continue your personal journey and implement with your staff, in your classrooms and kura.

Some of these are;

-  Include Mātauranga Māori, Ngā Kawatau, Te Tiriti and Niho Taniwha as PLD programmes opportunities

- Support teachers in learning Te Reo and local histories

-  Incorporate Niho Taniwha in planning

-  Develop Mātauranga Māori resources

-  Incorporate Niho Taniwha framework

-  Facilitate open and safe conversations about cultural understanding and responsiveness

So.............now what?

We would love to hear of any steps, PLD, ideas, plans, actions that take place as a result of this Conference day.   What is or will change in your school now that you have this information or have moved along in your own journey of understanding?

Please email any of your friendly AST's with anything you would like to share.
